Museum by the sea

    Voorstraat 46, Katwijk

    Artists’ village since 1873

In the early 1900s Katwijk was one of the most important artists’ villages in Europe. National and international painters settled in this small fishing village, attracted by both its dynamic fishing scenes on the beach and the wonderful light. The Katwijks Museum exhibits a remarkable collection of paintings by well-known artists such as Bernardus Johannes Blommers, Willy Sluiter, Jan van Goyen, Hans von Bartels, as well as Morgenstjerne Munthe, German Grobe and Jan Toorop.

This charming museum is located in the centre of the village in the middle of an attractive shopping area, within walking distance of the sea (200m) and is housed in a former shipowner’s residence dating from the early twentieth century. Over the years, the building has been extended with a modern wing. Besides the permanent collection of beautiful paintings by famous artists, the museum also offers temporary exhibitions and it can boast of an extensive collection of items relating to Katwijk’s rich fishing heritage.
Visit the Katwijks Museum and the lighthouse, take a refreshing walk along the beach and enjoy one of the excellent fish dishes in one of the many beach pavilions. There is plenty to see and do in Katwijk.

Welcome to the Katwijks Museum, the museum by the sea.

      Mark Parlevlietzaal Room

Of course, the history of the fishing industry is also presented: in the Mark Parlevliet room a great many ship models and lots of authentic materials are on display, all of which provide a vivid illustration of the development of life at sea and the importance of the fishing industry for Katwijk between 1600 and 1950. A cut-away scale model of the hospital church ship De Hoop and a model of the two-masted brig Doesburg, which used to sail all the seas of the world, are also on display here. Both models showcase the impressive skill of our museum’s model assembly group. You will also find a number of old trades and crafts portrayed here, such as barrel making, sail making and net mending.

        Meerburg Room

In the Meerburg room you will find the permanent exhibition, where the museum’s own collection is displayed in varying combinations. The museum boasts a respectable collection of paintings from the artists’ colony in Katwijk at the beginning of the 20th century. The daily activities on the Katwijk beach did not only attract painters such as Jan Toorop, Willy Sluiter and B.J. Blommers, but also foreign painters such as Hans von Bartels and G. Morgenstjerne Munthe. Most of the works date back to the period 1870-1914, but in recent years the collection has been extended to include works by contemporary artists as well.

          Monumental shipowners’ residence

In the monumental shipowners’ residence, which is the oldest part of the museum, you will find the so-called shipowner’s herenkamer (gentlemen’s room) in Neo-Renaissance style and the shipowner’s wife’s Neo-Empire style boudoir with its authentic furnishings. The striking mantlepieces and stained glass windows are true eye-catchers as well.

            Katwijk aan den Rijn

A special part of the museum is dedicated to Katwijk aan den Rijn, the in-land village with its own history as a market garden village. You will not only find paintings portraying the Rhine village, but also objects such as the Angelusklokje (Angelus bell), a fine impression of the Zanderij (the market garden area) and a scale model of the Rijnstraat (under construction).
