The Vuurbaak, also called Vierboet (fire beacon), is the second oldest surviving lighthouse in the Netherlands; only the Brandaris (on the island of Terschelling) is older. The tower has a height of 14 metres, and after climbing the stairs you arrive at the gallery, which is about 30 meters above sea level. In 1605 a request was made to stadtholder Prince Maurits to build a fire beacon. In 1628 stadtholder Frederik Hendrik, who was also Lord of both Catwijcken, permitted the fire beacon masters to levy a fixed share of the total proceeds of the fish auction for the maintenance of the lighthouse and the necessary firewood.
On top of the flat roof was an iron grate on which a wood fire would be lit. Later on this would be replaced by a coal fire, and in the mid-1800s the tower was equipped with a lantern room to accommodate an oil lamp with reflectors. This fishing light was only lit when ships of Katwijk’s own fleet were at sea. With the disappearance of the flat-bottomed fishing boats (the so-called bomschuiten), which would land on the beach until ca 1912, the lighthouse and its signal mast lost its original function.
Since 1968 the lighthouse has been open to the public during the summer months, when visitors are received by volunteers of the Katwijk Museum. And since 1980, also in summer, the former flat-bottomed shrimp fishing boat KW 88 Zorg en Hoop can be admired in front of the tower.
