Katwijk’s Traditional Costume

    Voorstraat 46, Katwijk

    Civilian and fisherman’s traditional costume

The traditional costume, once so characteristic of Katwijk, has disappeared now, but the Katwijks Museum boasts a wonderful collection of traditional costumes and accessories, showing the splendour of the civilian dress and the simpler attire of the fishing population. In the display case in the Jan van Brakel room on the first floor you will find ornamental head pieces, jewellery, caps and many more accessories that were once part of the traditional costumes of Katwijk and the Rhine area.

Our extensive collection of costumes, displayed on iconic dummies made by the well-known theatrical designer Jan Duyvetter, will give you an impression of the garments and accessories worn by our ancestors. Moreover, a great many painters have depicted the local population in traditional costume and some of their works are also on display in this room.

    Traditional costume group

The Genootschap Oud Katwijk (Katwijk historical society) has an active traditional costume group, whose main purpose is to collect, preserve, repair and restore the costumes and accessories such as jewellery, and put them on display, as well as bring them back to life at various events.

The traditional costume group is frequently invited by numerous municipalities to stage presentations and explain the nature and origin of the garments.

The traditional costume group can be contacted via klederdrachtkatwijk@live.nl and by phone via Mrs Agaath Haasnoot +31644580583.

For the traditional costume hire department, contact Mrs Ria Zuijderduijn, tel +316 51041210 or +31714025896 (17:00-20:00 hrs).
