Katwijk in bird’s eye view

    Voorstraat 46, Katwijk

    History in pictures and objects

    Katwijk in bird’s eye view

The attic floor of the museum is dedicated to Katwijk’s history. Here you will find a wealth of information: about the time of the Romans, the Frisians and the Franks, the regional Water Authority throughout the ages, Katwijk during the Second World War (in pictures), the rise of tourism and the recent Katwijk Coastal Defence project, which was awarded the Rijnland Architecture Prize in 2015. There is also a replica of a ship’s bridge from a lugger that was in service in the 1950s, and furthermore a special exhibition dedicated to the Engelandvaarders (lit. ‘England sailors’, which is an honorary term for the Dutch men and women who managed to escape from the occupied Netherlands during the Second World War to join the Allied forces in England).

    Engelandvaarders

In October 2018 a permanent exhibition about Engelandvaarders was added to the ‘Katwijk in Bird’s Eye View’ exhibition. This exhibition consists of a glass display case with drawers and a large interactive screen, and was developed and financed by the Stichting Monument Engelandvaarders Katwijk (Engelandvaarders Monument Foundation Katwijk). The photographs and film fragments displayed on the screen will tell you the story of the young men who set off in canoes from the beach in Katwijk in their attempts to reach England, and the escape of thirty Katwijk Engelandvaarders, who successfully made the crossing.

Mr Willem van der Plas, a local author known, amongst others, for having given a face to the people from Katwijk who died at sea, has collected the stories of these brave people from archives. Authentic documents, photographs and decorations were made available by relatives of these Katwijk Engelandvaarders, which, together with the personal stories, are now on display in the showcase drawers. An original canoe of the type that was used for the dangerous crossing to England is also on display here.

The attic floor is easily accessible and there is a stairlift for less mobile visitors.
