Katwijk: artists’ village since 1873

    Voorstraat 46, Katwijk

Katwijk: since 1873 an artists’ village by the sea

The picturesque coast of Katwijk and the life of local fishermen have been a source of inspiration for painters for centuries. In the course of time some twelve hundred artists from all over the world have lived and worked here. That is why you will find, both in the Netherlands and abroad, a great many works of art depicting scenes from Katwijk.

The painter Jan van Goyen from Leyden ‘discovered’ the coastal village as early as the seventeenth century. But it was between 1873 and 1914 that it developed into the second largest artists’ village in Europe. More and more painters decided to stay and settle in Katwijk and had houses and studios built there, among whom famous artists such as Jan Toorop, Max Liebermann, Jan Goedeljee, Bernardus Johannes Blommers and Willy Sluiter.

But in later years too, up to the present day, noteworthy works of art have been made in Katwijk, for instance by Johan de Vries, the Donker brothers and many plein air artists such as Daria Lavrova, Natalia Dik and Frans Bianchi. In other words, Katwijk has always remained an artists’ village.
