History

    Voorstraat 46, Katwijk

    Origins

The Katwijks Museum comprises the Genootschap ‘Oud Katwijk’ (Katwijk historical society) and the Stichting Katwijks Museum (Katwijks Museum Foundation).

The Genootschap Oud Katwijk was founded at a time when a large part of the Katwijk heritage was in danger of being lost forever. Traditional costumes were disappearing from everyday life and in the village old houses and buildings were demolished to make way for new construction projects. The economic growth of the after-war period also accelerated developments, in the fishing industry as well.

Around 1900 Katwijk was a popular location for artists from a great many countries, resulting in an artists’ colony of about 1200 artists. Renowned artists such as B.J. Blommers, Jan Toorop. Willy Sluiter and Hans von Bartels had their houses (with studios) built in Katwijk. Their work can be admired in the Katwijks Museum.

Today, artists still come to the coast to capture their impressions of sea, beach, dunes and the village. Their work, too, is on display in the Katwijks Museum and in the DUNAatelier on Duinplein (opposite the Vuurbaak).
