    EUROART WE INSPIRE CULTURAL CONNECTION

The Katwijks Museum, the Municipality of Katwijk and the Stichting Kunstvereeniging Katwijk (Katwijk art society foundation) are members of EuroArt.

EuroArt is the European federation of 45 artists’ colonies in 13 countries.

It has been founded with the aim of:

    • preserving the cultural heritage of the artists’ colonies
    • developing and operating a network of artists’ colonies and artists’ villages in Europe
    • preserving and promoting the artistic tradition of artists’ colonies
    • promoting mutual cultural understanding
    • promoting a more intensive cooperation between its members and their artists by funding and supporting, amongst others, collaboration projects, workshops and events
    • promoting the contemporary art scene in the artists’ colonies
    • creating a cultural awareness of artists’ colonies among European citizens

Between 1873 and 1914 Katwijk aan Zee was one of the largest artists’ colonies in Europe. Over 1200 Dutch and foreign painters lived and worked in Katwijk aan Zee, among whom renowned painters such as Max Liebermann, Willy Sluiter, Bernardus Johannes Blommers, Hans von Bartels, David Adolphe Constant Artz and Jan Toorop.

In the 17th century the painter Jan van Goyen from Leyden was also a regular visitor. He would make a sketch of the (beach) scene and would subsequently paint it on canvas in his studio in Leyden (since the paint tube, of course, had not been invented yet).
